A Good Race in the Night
11th September 2007
On Saturday the 8th September 2007 the 7th round of the FIA GT Championship
took place on the Adria Raceway close to the gateway of Venice.
The two hour race was started in the sunset and finished under flood light.
The spectators saw a very close and thrilling race on the short and twisty
circuit.
The Aston Martin DBR9 of Jamie Davies and Fabio Babini started the race from
4th place on the grid. Fabio drove the start and he was able to pass the Corvette
for 3rd position in the first lap of his stint. Right up to the driver change
Fabio kept the 3rd place. Jamie succeeded in his turn to drive up to place
2nd and for a short period even up to P1. He changed back to Fabio for the
final stint but the competition with the Aston Martin from Jet Alliance and
the Maserati of Bertolini/Piccini was to hard to keep the place. The Jet Alliance
Aston Martin with Karl Wendlinger and Ryan Sharp won the race in front of the
Maserati of Andrea Bertolini and Andrea Piccini. With a gap of 3,5 seconds
and 8 seconds behind the winners Jamie Davies and Fabio Babini finished 3rd
on the podium.
Jamie: “I would like to thank BMS as they have worked really hard since
Spa. They obviously had to prepare a new car after the last one was destroyed.
The car has just run faultlessly over the weekend. Pirelli supplied us with some
great tyres which were really consistent through the weekend. We were able to
push quite hard and keep the car at competitive lap times. I think this consistency
is what got us the podium today. It was very interesting to drive at night – it
was a good spectacle for the spectators and the television. I enjoyed it – it
was something new to have a sprint race going into the evening, and the floodlighting
was good. Sometimes I kept thinking that a car was right behind me but I finally
found out it was one of the floodlights! But it was good fun!”
